Answers for the JC Hunt
Well, now that the preliminary round is over, the answers are posted here. Here are the answers:
Secret page- nought.html. The footer at the bottom of every page directs you to nought.html
Clue 1- brutus.html. The synonym of origin is source. So, right-click, view source. You find an ancient spell and asking you to choose 1 of 3 spells to incur Caesar's wrath. The only spell which makes sense is nothing (nought) to the person who stabbed him last. Marcus Brutus stabbed Caesar last, so the answer is brutus.html
Clue 2- guard.html. The person is Lucillius. Deduct lli you get Lucius. He was ordered by Brutus and Cassius to stand guard outside Brutus' tent while Brutus and Cassius were quarelling. Thus, the answer is guard.html
Clue 3- zyysrrnnlhgfff.htm. Scroll down and you will see a pink patch. Highlight it and you will get the message "Give the movie title which our play is based on, and our assistant scriptwriter's full name. Omit all vowels in both of these names and rearrange the letters in reverse alphabetical order. Lastly, change the extension to another extension by omitting a letter." Our play is based on the movie "Infernal Affairs". Our assistant scriptwriter's name is none other than Yong Zhiyi. Omitting all vowels you get nfrnlffrsyngzhy. Putting them in reverse alphabetical order will give you zyysrrnnlhgfff. Lastly, the extension of guard.html is .html. Omit l and you will get the extension .htm. Thus, the answer is zyysrrnnlhgfff.htm.
Clue 4- qwedrty.htm Caesar was a ghost. Mirroring a word is to write in in reverse order. You get ghosttsohg. That is your username. As for the code, you should know that Caesar invented 2 codes. Since the passage is not a squared number, you know that we must use Caesar Cipher to decode. For me, I used http://planet.time.net.my/klcc/ngkokyong/js/shiftcipher.html. Then, try all the decryption keys. You should find that K-1=9 is the only correct key that will give you an understandable passage. You will get: "First, find the character mentioned in the code you have just decrypted. After you've gotten the name find out who cautioned this person. After finding out this new person, find out who confided his/her worries to this person. Then, find out the other partner of this newest person. Then, find the conspirator whose name is closely related to this one and take the difference of both. The answer is your password." Caesar cipher, so the character mentioned is of course Caesar. The soothsayer cautioned Caesar about the Ides of March. Portia confided her worries to the Soothsayer. The partner (literally husband) of Portia is Brutus. The conspirator whose name is closely related is Decius Brutus. Thus, the difference of these two and the password is Decius.
Clue 5- diis3mouset.html First, check the source code. You will find that you have to change the extension back to .html and that the URL of this website is actually qwedrty.htm. Then, you must identify the gadget the URL is related to. The answer is keyboard as qwerty is usually associated with qwerty. Anyway, if you literally look down when you sit at the computer reading the clue, you see the keyboard. Thus, the odd-one-out letter is d. A one-lettered eye is just i. Using the fundamental theory, you find that (3, 2, 57, 4) is actually Act 3, Scene 2, Line 57, Word 4. Of what? Julius Caesar of course, the is the JC Hunt what! Check Julius Caesar and you find the answer is "is". Again, explore the website and you will find an algebraic expression for a green smiley face (
). Solve it and you know
is 3. The name of the animal beside your gadget is of course, the mouse. Lastly, A cup of tea, so the answer is t. Now, this is where most get wrong. Most people will type keyboarddiis3mouset.html. This is wrong as I only asked you to IDENTIFY the gadget, not type. Thus, the answer is diis3mouset.html.
Clue 6- spade.html. The clue "I love Caesarian Salad. What's not been eaten before?" Is a direct reference of "Which code has not been used before?" The answer, of course, is Caesar Box. Decode and you get "Look at the counter, second one." You then notice that this counter is different from the ones you got so far. There is the addition of "Poker card suits" behind the numbers. Thus, the second box of the counter is a spade, which leads to spade.html. Please note it is not spades.html as the second one only has ONE spade.
Clue 7- jinglebells.html. First, look at the title. You see that it is jumbled up. Solve and you get "anagram". Thus, royu nxet uecl becomes your next clue, and if you use an online anagram solver, epotlheen is telephone. So, what does the mass of %&^% have to do with telephones? First, translate them to numbers. For example, $=4, &=7 and so on. You get 514362415332223253537431638142816153. If you look at your telephone buttons, you should know that the button 2 has the letters ABC and button 5 has JKL. But which one? This is where the second number comes into use. You find out that every even placed number (ex. every second, fourth, sixth number etc.) is not more than 4. Thus, you can deduce that the second number shows you which letter on that button it is. Decode and you get "jinglebells dot html" which is jinglebells.html.
Clue 8- The password is "You". First, you look at the title and find: "Dead End- Do not Try Again". When you read the passage, it tells you to click on the back button and try again. However, remember clue 7? There is a sentence that tells you to always trust yourself. Also, if you do not try again, you carry on. Thus, this page is correct. Carrying on, you find out that " be brave, be bold , and carry on" is unusual because be bold has 2 spaces between them. You conclude that be bold is a clue. Then you see that some letters are bolded. Find all the letters and you get empressyouthsource. Then, you look closer at "What is 1-1" and find out that the minus sign is bolded. So it is now empressyouth-source. You read on and this passage " Just compare: = and =, what is the difference? Why, one is longer, of course. So, can you see it now? Can you see which one is special? The longer one! However, even though there are always two, just take one! Yes, it is _ _ _ _ ed" is talking about an equals sign whereby one is longer. Then there are blanks. Since the whole page is talking about bold, filling in bold in the blanks gets you "bolded". Thus, you know that the equal sign is also bolded. You now check the source for the second part of the clue. You get resthe (one is better than two)x. You know "one is better than two" refers to the equals sign. However, you are told to take one, thus the whole sentence is empressyouth-resthe=x. Do the necessary deduction and you get x=mpsyou. Now, look at the second part of the clue. x>password + m. x<password+mops x-psy=password. Ignore the first two as the third equation has an equals sign and it has only one variable. So, you take mpsyou-psy=mou. Why isn't that the password? Scroll back up and you see the sentence " The criteria for below is the number of letters. All letters count as 1." Thus, you now know that deducting psy is NOT really deducting psy, but deducting 3 letters. Lastly, you find out that the password is "literally an english word". Thus, mpsyou-3 letters= an english word. Deduct mps and you get You. Thus, the password is you. Congrats! You've solved the preliminary round of the JC Hunt!
